Screening of Dušan Makavejev’s Innocence Unprotected spotlights the panel focusing on the project of paranational cinema — Wednesday, Sept. 30th @ Archival Assembly #4 — Archives, otherwise / Kino Arsenal, Berlin
In our panel, we will discuss the conceptual framing and methodological challenges behind the prefix ‘para’ by focusing on three films found in or closely related to the Arsenal archive: Dušan Makavejev’s Nevinost bez zaštite (1968), Skip Norman’s Cultural Nationalism (1969), and Assja Djebar’s La zerda et Les chants de l’oubli (1982). How do they process questions of ‘nation’ and belonging, either in their form, discourse, or the material conditions at their basis? Does the history of the prints – including aspects such as subtitles, language versions, formats – speak to their irreducibility to single national contexts? Another beginning of October, dedicated to Pansini in his hometown Korčula. Besides the curatorial work for grown ups, this year we have a workshop on experimental cinema for children — a group of 4 and 5 yr olds initiated into the liberated cinema and the fantastic cinematic worlds of Mihovil Pansini.

Film projects left unfinished; films that remained unseen; film ideas realised in non-filmic media: The heterogenous materialities and precarious traces of these practices upset the notions of what cinema consists of. A film undone is both less and more than “a film”; the dispersed elements, not integrated into a final format, are also evidence of an extensive labour process, exceeding its expected result.
